Are We Sacrificing Only Animals… or Our Ego Too This Dhul Hijjah?

Every year during Dhul Hijjah, millions of Muslims around the world prepare for Qurbani — the sacrifice of animals in remembrance of the devotion and obedience of Prophet Ibrahim (AS).

But perhaps one of the most important questions we should ask ourselves is:

Are we preparing to sacrifice only animals this Dhul Hijjah… or are we sincerely sacrificing our ego, bad habits, and sinful desires as well?

The true spirit of sacrifice was never only about the animal itself.

Allah says in the Qur’an:

“Neither their meat nor their blood reaches Allah, but what reaches Him is piety from you.”
— (Surah Al-Hajj 22:37)

This beautiful verse reminds us that Allah is not looking at the outward act alone — He looks at the sincerity, humility, obedience, and condition of our hearts.

The Hardest Sacrifice Is Often Invisible

Sometimes the hardest things to sacrifice are not material things.

It is:

* sacrificing pride to apologise,
* sacrificing anger to protect relationships,
* sacrificing jealousy and arrogance,
* sacrificing harmful habits,
* sacrificing sins we secretly hold onto,
* sacrificing the constant desires of the nafs (ego/self).

These sacrifices are often unseen by people — but deeply seen by Allah.

Prophet Ibrahim’s Legacy Was Complete Submission

When Prophet Ibrahim (AS) was commanded to sacrifice what he loved most, he submitted completely to Allah without hesitation.

His story teaches us that true faith requires trust, sincerity, and willingness to let go for the sake of Allah.

Dhul Hijjah is not only a season of rituals.
It is a season of purification.

A season to return to Allah with a softer heart.

Small Changes Matter

Not everyone can transform overnight.

But these blessed days are a beautiful opportunity to begin.

Maybe this Dhul Hijjah we can:

* pray more sincerely,
* control our tongue,
* forgive someone,
* reduce a bad habit,
* increase dhikr,
* reconnect with the Qur’an,
* or simply become more conscious of Allah in our daily lives.

Even small sincere efforts carry immense reward during these blessed days.

A Reminder for All of Us

As we prepare for Eid al-Adha and Qurbani, may we also prepare our hearts.

May Allah help us sacrifice the parts of ourselves that distance us from Him, and replace them with sincerity, patience, humility, and taqwa.

Ameen.
